Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The location you live has more influence on your happiness than the kind of job you have. Use specific examples to support your answer.

Topics about happiness, in this day and age, have become increasingly popular among people, probably because people now have higher expectation on their life satisfaction. Recently, a discussion whether or not the places to live matter more than the job to the people’s happiness has caused a heat debate. For myself, the answer is negative; it is people’s job that exerts greater impact on people’ happiness instead of the living places. I will support my view in the following aspects.

Admittedly, the choice of living places does have a certain influence on people’s sense of happiness. For example, those people who live in a suburban area may unhappily complain about the inconvenience of the transportation. Such influence, however, is easy to be adjusted; these people can buy a private car to solve their problem. Unlike this adjustable influence, the influence brought forth by people’s career choice is able to spread its power to every aspect of life and, more importantly, is very hard to change.

First of all, the schedule of people’s work affects people’s happiness in an all-round way and with strong power. Different from the living place which can be adjusted through some simple changes, the work schedule cannot be changed according to people’s own preference, especially in this day and age when finding a new job becomes increasingly difficult. Therefore, people’s vocation exerts greater influence on people’s happiness. For instance, the work of some people such as the shop assistants in the convenience stores requires them to work on the night shift or on the weekend. For these people, they are not able to accompany their families, since their family members all work in a nine-to-five mode and on weekdays. This, without any doubt, will adversely affect their sense of happiness.

More importantly, people are more likely to put their pursuits and ideals on their jobs instead of their living places. Their career choice and job performance therefore have a much more profound influence on their sense of happiness, whereas the places where people live cannot exert such influence to their spiritual world. Take the vocation of teacher as an example. Some people choose to serve as a teacher in order to make contribution to the education cause. To these people, their work is not only a method to make a living, more importantly an important way to realize their self value. It is thus natural for them to derive more happiness from their work.

To summarize, although the job that people choose to take only constitutes a part when deciding people’s happiness, it is indeed much more influential than the places of living to people’s life satisfaction.
