Do you agree or disagree: young people today are more likely to give time and effort to improving the world than young people were in the past.
It is commonly accepted that the young people constitute the future of the society, thus people today are putting an increasing amount of expectation on them. Some people expect the young to devote themselves to bettering the world; others, however, contend that young people today, compared to their counterpart in the past, are less likely to spend time and effort doing so. I agree with the latter point, since we have to admit that there are indeed some practical limitations for young people today to make the contribution to the world.
My stance toward this issue does not mean that I believe there are no single young person is willing to make commitment to improving the world; there are actually some outstanding representatives who are making their unique contribution in their own ways, such as by working as a volunteer in underdeveloped areas and even establishing their own non-profit organizations. These individuals, however, only account for a rather small part of the whole group of today’s young people. In most cases, young people today are less likely to spend effort and time improving the world.
The first reason is that young people today are bearing much heavier study burden; they do not have time and energy to do things other than striving for good scores and rankings. This is one of the main objective reasons. Though somewhat miserable, it has to be admitted that many young people today are prevented from making their contribution for the public good because of their study pressure. The society, directly or indirectly, has set the primary goal for them—to become excellent in academic performance and then enter a promising university, which is especially common in China. Therefore, even if the young people have intents to contribute helpfully to the world, due to their limited lime and energy, they are not able to. Furthermore, their parents and teachers, with worry that it will adversely affect their academic performance, will not allow them to, either.
In addition, there is also a general trend that young people today care much more about their own personal development and achievement, constituting the subjective reason for their less attention to the general society. Due to the increasingly fierce competition, most of the young people, in order to make themselves stand out, choose to do things with results advantageous to them. Typical examples happen when the young people are applying for the universities or graduate schools. Many young people serve as volunteers only to add some meaningful experiences on their resume; they actually are not doing for the general society but for themselves. In one word, it seems that young people today possess more utilitarian purposes and goals for the good of themselves; they are less likely to contribute time and effort to improving the world.
To sum up, due to both the objective and subjective reasons, it is less likely that young people would spend time and effort promoting the good of the whole world. They are occupied by their heavy study burden and are more willing to realize their own personal value instead of the social value.
